Paintings - 2002 - 2017 - See slide show of images with titles
This series explores a range of approaches to layering materials in order to create varied surface textures, with the aim of investigating painting as a physically present form. The concept emerged from experiences James Concagh had during extensive walks through the city of São Paulo between 2000 and 2006. These walks often included the collection of materials such as cloth, jute, and raffia—elements that would later become central to his practice.
In 2010, an accidental spill of a black paint mixture onto a white raffia canvas led to a key discovery. Concagh observed that the darker paint brought out the texture of the surface with greater clarity than lighter tones, which tended to reflect light and obscure detail. He was drawn to how the darker surface appeared more coherent and static—qualities that lent the work a heightened sense of presence.
