Artist Statement
James Concagh is a visual artist whose work explores textured compositions inspired by the urban landscape of São Paulo. His focus lies particularly on the architecture of the city's periphery, examining the function and form of its often overlooked structures.
His paintings are built through a process of layering materials—cement, lime washes, pitch paint, industrial cleaning agents, raffia sacking, and found textiles—many of which he sources directly from locations around the city. This gathering process is integral to his practice, grounding each piece in the physical and social fabric of São Paulo.
Concagh views painting as a means of generating presence—a tangible surface that embodies the material reality of its subject. Through his use of texture and residue, he often leaves behind traces of the process itself, evoking a sense of time and place that is both immediate and enduring.
